Abstract
Objectives: The objective of this qualitative research is to create a model of the obstacles to quitting smoking in the primary care setting. Design Individual in-depth, semi-structured interviews were audio recorded, followed by verbatim transcription and, if required, translation. By using Straussian grounded theory approach, the data were initially independently coded, and then collectively discussed for emerging themes. Parties and environment From a prior smoking-related study conducted in a Varun Arjun Medical College and Rohilkhand Hospital, Shahjahanpur (UP) 57 current smokers were selected. On there were current smokers who had made at least one unsuccessful try to quit. Results: Through the use of grounded theory, a five-theme model was produced. (1) Individual and lifestyle factors: Participants found it difficult to resist the urge to smoke; (2) Nicotine addiction: Withdrawal symptoms were difficult to manage; (3) Social and cultural norms: Participants found it difficult to accept cigarettes from companions as a sign of friendship; (4) Misconception: Smokers believed that their ability to stop smoking depended solely on their capacity for mind control and that quitting will harm their bodies. (5) Failed assisted smoking cessation: Services for quitting smoking were perceived as being difficult to access and poorly understood. Themes that were actionable in the short term (themes 1 and 2) and the long term (themes 3 and 4) were arranged into five concentric circles. Conclusions: Smokers were deterred from quitting by five themes of particular practises and beliefs. Clinicians must address these obstacles, and they can do so by using the suggested time periods to help patients achieve in quitting smoking.
